Zero Waste Project

Who we are: A decentralized model of waste management was implemented in the Ghazipur (Delhi) dairy farms area which houses nearly 1000 households. Residents were not segregating waste and nearly 476 tons/year waste was going to landfill with 30% households broadcasting the waste on road side or open area.re vulnerable to illnesses. The waste management plan focused on

  • Developing sustainable livelihoods for informal waste workers
  • Mainstreaming waste workers, families, improve social parameters-health, education
  • Segregating the waste at the household level and process it at the local level
  • Workshops to introduce waste pickers to aerobic composting & waste management techniques.

What we do: A decentralized model of waste management was implemented in the Ghazipur (Delhi) dairy farms area which houses nearly 1000 households, where residents were not segregating waste and nearly 476 tons/year waste was going to landfill. 30% households broadcast the waste on road side or open area and ill-equipped waste collectors were vulnerable to illnesses. The waste management plan focused on

  • Developing sustainable livelihoods for informal waste workers.
  • Mainstreaming waste workers, families, improve social parameters-health, education
  • Segregating the waste at the household level and process it at the local level
  • Workshops to introduce waste pickers to aerobic composting & waste management techniques

Impact created:

The initiative helped to test its sustainability - not just economically, but also environmentally and socially and how maximum proportion of waste can be used. Initially out of 926 households only 530 i.e. only 57% of families practiced garbage disposal (that too in a random way). After six months 80% of families i.e. 745 of them carry out project orientated garbage management practices.

  • 745 families (80% of total 926 households) mobilized to manage waste responsibly
  • 72 tonnes of solid waste collected in six-months period
  • 38 tonnes kg of solid waste avoided the landfill fate in six months
  • 16 tonnes wet-waste converted to 1.1 tonnes of compost
  • 2 tonnes of wet waste reused as cattle feeding
  • 14 tonnes of dry waste vended for recycle and reused
